Keeping Your Home Safe From Burglary

Becoming a victim of a robbery is a very scary but realistic scenario. There are several ways that you can keep your home safe from burglary. Some of them are simply changes in your daily habits. Here are some tips that you may be able to incorporate into your daily routine in order to deter burglars from trying to get into your home:

The Obvious

It is obvious, but it deserves mention, that alarm systems and dogs are the best ways to deter burglars. They are both aggressive measures that most thieves will not bother in trying to get past. If you do not have the money for a fancy alarm system, and you are allergic to or just don't like dogs, you will still be able to use other methods.

Lighting

The way that you light your home will have an affect on whether it is a target or one not to mess with. The more lights you have lit, the better. This is not always feasible, because of electricity costs, but when no one is at home, you could leave a few lights on to make it look as if someone is.

Get a timer to switch which lights are on if you are going to be away for an extended amount of time. Lighting up the outdoor area in front of your home, is also a good idea in keeping away thieves, as they tend to go for areas where it is dark and they can easily hide.

Giving Away Information

One of the worst things you can do is tell people when you are going to be away. This is an announcement to all potential thieves that your home is going to be empty. Do not post things on your social media page saying that you are going to be on vacation. Ask a trusted neighbor, family member or friend to check on your home while you are away. They should be the only person that is aware that you are not home.

Hiding Keys

Many people hide a spare key on the premises of their home in case of an emergency. While this is a convenience, it is also a risk. If you do decide to hide a key, put it in a place far from the door it will be opening. Buy a small plastic combination lock safe that can be hidden under a railing or in a shed where you can place the key. Screw it in place so it cannot be taken.

Simple Things

Giving your home a wave each time you leave can make people think that you are waving at someone still inside the home. You never know who may be watching you when you leave each day, and this is a great way to make you look as if someone is there watching over the house. Putting up a beware of the dog sign can make burglars move on to another home because they will not want to take the chance. The same holds true for putting up a home alarm system sign on your property.
